Sailability Taranaki Trust

21st Dec 2018

The Sailability Taranaki Trust help both intellectually and physically disabled to sail. This is achieved through training and custom designed boats suiting the needs of each specific disabilities. They help make sailing a sport for these people, so they can compete against able bodied sailors. Physiotherapists rate this program highly as it gives the disabled full control. One example Dave Allerton gave us was, they have a girl with cerebral palsy and only has the use of one digit, that is her big toe. The Sailability Trust have arranged a custom-made boat for her which operates from an iPad which she can operate with her toe.

The trust has been operating for 8 years and is helping over 400 kids per year. It’s not only limited to kids however, the oldest person they have helped is a 93 year old lady who had it on her bucket list to go sailing. The trust helped her fulfil this dream.

The donation of $500 from Waterworks goes towards the day-to-day running costs on the trust such as insurance, maintenance, and storage. The team at Waterworks are honoured to be able to support such a worthy cause as part of our mission of giving back to the community in our ‘Community Support 2018’ initiative.
